Wesley SWL Adjusting Eddies’ Cobweb Antenna
The Cobweb Antenna is a popular choice among shortwave listeners (SWL) and amateur radio enthusiasts due to its compact size and excellent multi-band performance. Adjusting and fine-tuning this antenna can greatly improve reception quality and signal clarity. Below is a guide to help Wesley SWL adjust The Cobweb Antenna effectively.
- Understanding the Cobweb Antenna
- The Cobweb antenna is a multi-element, multi-band antenna typically covering the 20m, 17m, 15m, 12m, and 10m amateur radio bands.
- It consists of eight elements arranged in a square pattern, resembling a spider web.
- Designed for horizontal polarization, it offers good gain and directivity.
- Initial Setup
- Mount the antenna above ground level for optimal performance.
- Ensure the antenna is horizontally level and securely fastened.
- Use a quality coaxial feedline (e.g., RG-213 or equivalent) to minimize signal loss.
- Checking the SWR (Standing Wave Ratio)
- Connect an SWR meter between the feedline and your receiver or transmitter.
- Sweep through each band to check the SWR readings.
- Ideal SWR should be below 2:1 on all bands. Higher values indicate mismatches.
- Adjusting the Elements
- The antenna elements are usually adjustable in length to fine-tune resonance.
- Use the original design dimensions as a starting point.
- If SWR is high on a particular band, slightly shorten or lengthen the corresponding elements.
- Make small adjustments (around 1-2 cm) and recheck the SWR after each change.
